magpul glock magazine review

Magpul Glock Magazine Review - The Glock 17 is probably one of the most popular combat pistols since 1911 or Hi-Power. They are relatively cheap and easy to shoot for beginners. While the gun itself is relatively inexpensive, magazines are not. Until recently, Glock had a monopoly on magazines to power your Glock 9mm. This kept retail prices around $25 and LE prices not much lower. For that reason alone, I was uplifted when Magpul announced Pmag Glock compatible.

We got our first Pmaga 17 GL9 at SHOT 2015. Magpul had a few visitors to snuggle up at their booth. I was pleased to see that the capacity was correct (equal to factory magazines) and that they released when the magazine was released.

One of the most interesting features of the Pmag GL9 was the new design of the base plate. Borrowing from the original Pmaga, Magpul designed the GL9 to be removed in the field with a pistol round. In this case, it was a 9mm caliber bullet. Simply push the end of the wheel into the base plate holder to eject the base plate. This is much easier than removing the plate from the Glock magazine with the armor tool.

Magpul also explained the fact that shooters like to number their frames to better keep records (age, crashes, etc.). They pressed the mesh into the underside of the base plate. Just a few seconds with a pen and you will have a mark that is unlikely to be erased after a few hard days of training.

The Magpul Pmag GL9 does not use a metal insert like current Glock non-drop magazines. They are a full polymer body. This worried me at first, but after a few weeks and countless hundreds of rounds, my fears turned out to be unfounded. Within a few days of training, I mixed factory and Magpul magazines. I couldn't tell the Magpul from the Glock. Both are loaded with equal ease. Both can be loaded manually, with a Glock charger or an UpLula charger. Efficiency in G17 was 100%.

When discussing the Magpul GL9, the question "why?" always arises. Why would a professional or competition shooter choose these magazines over stock Glock magazines? My "Blue Label" Glock 17 came from the factory with three 17-round magazines. This is enough for days at the shooting range, concealed carry or uniforms. However, this is not enough for an advanced pistol class, a Steel Challenge match or serious training at the shooting range. For this I recommend at least 5-10 magazines. At $25 for factory stocks, this is a small investment. Magpul GL9 magazines are now selling for around $15-$16. Cost shouldn't be the deciding factor in everything we focus on in life. However, if I can get a product with the same or better performance for less money, it becomes a consideration. In our tests, the GL9 performed at least as well as the stock alternative. When you add ease of disassembly to that, it's hard to miss.

I realize that there will be those who will carry factory magazines in their Glocks only for service or transport. For those, I recommend collecting Pmags and saving the consumption of factory magazines. Run factory warehouses for carrying out and qualification. Beat Pmags on those long training days when you're pounding magazines into gravel or concrete.

The Pmag 17 GL9 is not without flaws. Our GL9 magazines worked perfectly in our 4th generation Glock 17. They also worked well in the friendly G19 4th generation. Some of the first GL9 series had issues with the G19. It's apparently resolved. If you have any early issues of magazines, I encourage you to contact Magpul. The only problem we found with the Pmag 17 GL9 came when we tried to use them on our 3rd generation Glock 26. This G26 is one of my regular CCW pistols and has been extremely reliable with the factory 17-round and 10-round magazines. I couldn't get to it without a full magazine failure (rapid fire) from the GL9. I attribute this to the short grip of the G26 which presses my hand into the magazine. The size difference in the GL9 seems to be enough for the pressure on the magazine to cause it to tilt in the pistol and prevent feeding.

Another flaw we encountered with the Pmag 17 GL9 concerned the accessories. Our G17 is equipped with the Dawson Precision ICE magwell. This will align the stock magazine base plate flush with the bottom of the magazine well. We had no problems loading a loaded magazine. However, it was almost impossible to pull the magazine to make sure it stayed in place. Even with the serrations on the side of the GL9 base, we couldn't get a good grip on the magazine. Our factory Glock magazines come with +2 baseplates that make them much easier to seat or split. There are many options for aftermarket baseboards that will work from factory stock. ZEV recently released a +5 extension for Pmag 17 that will fix this.

Shortly after we received our GL9 magazines, Magpul released the L-Plate. The Magpul L-Plate is a rubber base plate for the GL9 magazine that extends approximately 1/8″ over the included hard plastic plate. The L-Plate also provides a little cushioning when the tank is repeatedly dropped on a hard concrete surface. The L plate was the solution to use the Pmag 17 GL9 on our Magwell equipped G17. Installing the L plate was as simple as using a 9mm insert to remove it from the original plate and pull it onto the L plate. Unfortunately, installing the L plate means you lose the magazine numbering feature on the standard floor plate.

The L plate should have been on the GL9 initially, not as an aftermarket add-on. Magpul could then place the marking grid on the side or rear of the magazine. The only reason I see the GL9 with hard plastic panels is to keep the price down.

Having driven hundreds of rounds through it, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Pmag 17 GL9 to Glock 17 and Glock 19 owners. I recommend G26 owners to stick to factory magazines until Magpul releases the Pmag 12 GL9. This post contains affiliate links. The Magpul PMAG 27 GL9 is Magpul's seventh offer of magazines for the Glock. While there have been a few Glock stock outages in the past, it's not something anyone smiles about like some other no-name companies. So what does an aftermarket magazine guarantee for arguably the most reliable pistol manufacturer in the world, produced by arguably the largest and most respected magazine manufacturer in the world? Well, with a mission like "Bringing innovation to individuals in the shortest amount of time", there's little that Magpul can't improve upon. And Glock magazines are just the latest target of the great polymer innovator.

The Magpul PMAG 27 GL9 is a 27-round 9mm double-stack magazine that will fit any 9mm double-stack Glock ever made, from the "baby Glock" 26 to the long slide 34 and all 19's 17's , 45's and 48's in between. In fact, of the twenty-three Glock models that fire the 9×19 round, only two are non-traditional double-stack and therefore cannot use the Magpul PMAG 27 GL9 magazine. So I think it would be a lot easier to list the 9% of 9mm Glocks that can't fire the new Magpul magazine.

Magpul PMAG 27 GL9 is a new amount of cartridges for Glock magazines. There was a gap between the 21-round Magpul 21 GL9 magazine and the 33-round Glock's so-called "lucky stick". So what's the magic in 27 rounds that 21 or 33 couldn't cover? Well, a few things. A big problem is the procedural problem that limits competition magazines to a total length of 170 mm. How it came to 170mm is the first fight to come, but 17cm is the length of a single .45ACP magazine for 10-11 rounds. And for this Glock fanboypreppersurvialist, I don't look at 27 rounds as an increase or decrease. I see it as an option.

Review Of The Pmag 12 Gl9 Magazine For The Glock 26

The lens through which you can see the magazine capacity varies. It could be cost, concealment, expected need, weapon limitations, ammo storage, or even something as practical as weight. Well, of course there are location restrictions, but I can't help you with that. In the case of the Magpul PMAG 27 GL9, it addresses a very specific need that makes sense to anyone wondering how best to prepare
